Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

excerpt

“You must never behave as if your life belongs to a man. Do you hear me? Your life belongs to you and you alone”.

Every now and then, I come across a book that leaves me sitting in silence once I’ve finished it. Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is one of those books.

Set in 1960s Nigeria, during the time of the Biafran War, this novel follows the lives of three very different characters whose stories eventually intertwine: Ugwu, a young village boy who becomes a houseboy to a university professor; Olanna, a woman from a wealthy Nigerian family who chooses a quieter, more meaningful life; and Richard, a British man who falls in love with Nigerian culture (and a woman who is deeply tied to it).

What I found most powerful about this book is the way it makes history feel personal. I’ll be honest, before reading it, I didn’t know much about the Biafran War beyond what I’d heard in passing. But through Adichie’s storytelling, I felt the fear, hope, loss, and love that people lived through during such a devastating time. The writing is vivid and unfiltered, yet still beautiful. You feel like you know the characters, and even when you don’t always agree with their choices, you understand them.

It’s a story about war, yes, but also about identity, family, class, love, and what it means to survive when everything around you is falling apart. As someone who is passionate about telling real, honest stories, especially those that reflect who we are and where we come from, this book hit home in so many ways.

Chimamanda’s writing is so graceful yet unapologetically raw. She doesn’t sugarcoat the horror of war, but she also doesn’t strip away the humanity of the people caught in it. She writes with clarity, heart, and courage, something I really admire.

If you’re looking for a novel that challenges you emotionally, teaches you something new, and stays with you long after you’ve finished reading, I honestly can’t recommend Half of a Yellow Sun enough. It’s not a light read, but it’s an important one.

Have you read it already? I’d love to hear your thoughts below. Or if it’s on your list, I hope this inspires you to finally pick it up.

With love,
